RAEGE in the Azores is a valuable contribution to the world

On December 7, 2021, Paulo Faustino, a reporter for the newspaper “Açoriano Oriental”, visited Santa Maria’s RAEGE Station. During the visit, the importance of Fundamental Geodetic stations like this one to society and the community (local and international) was explained.

This article highlights the year 2021 as an important milestone for Santa Maria’s RAEGE Station, because it was possible to return, in May 2021, to IVS (International VLBI Service for Astrometry and Geodesy) observations after an intense period of repairs in the station's radio telescope. The work developed with partners, the possibility of putting some partnerships into practice after the 2020 pandemic situation made it impossible for students from the Institute of Astrophysics and Space Sciences (IASTRO, Lisbon) to go to Santa Maria that year. It was in 2021 that the partnership with this University, that had created a Radio Astronomy course because of this partnership, which allows master’s students to go to the Station and had time for on-site observation. Without neglecting other partner universities of the RAEGE Azores Association, such as the University of the Azores, Porto and Beira Interior, the Lisbon College of Engineering, the Collaboratory for Geosciences and the Institute of Telecommunications.

Francisco Wallenstein in an interview says that “Finally we have a team and there are many projects in our sights. We are just getting started.”
