European Researchers' Night is an initiative launched in 2005, funded by the European Commission, with the intention of celebrating Science, as well as creating a connection between scientists and people.
The theme of the European Researchers' Night 2021 in Portugal is in line with the European Ecological Pact, which proposes that the impact on the climate be neutral by 2050, through the promotion of initiatives that protect the environment and boost the green economy, reducing pollution.
On Santa Maria Island, the event was promoted locally by Expolab – Centro de Ciência Viva (Science Center) , being held on September 24th at the local business incubator, INCUBA+.
RAEGE-Az was present at this event with an activity about VLBI (Very Long Baseline Interferometry), the main technique used at Santa Maria’s RAEGE Station to study the planet Earth. The focus of this activity was the movement of tectonic plates, but the discoveries about our planet don't focus just on the movements of the Earth's crust. From this technique, we can also obtain information about climate change and much more.
So, we decided to make a supplementary video about the activity that we took to the event for a better understanding of this technique that we use to study planet Earth, the VLBI.
